Book Description:
All Hannah needs is a nice and quiet vacation after her first year of teaching French at a high school. She joins her brother Ben for the summer in their mom’s log cabin in Arizona. There, she meets Josh again, Ben’s childhood friend from the Navajo reservation. The little boy from the rez has grown up fast, and Hannah can’t help but feeling more for him than just friendship.
But fate apparently has something else in store for her. And it’s not peace and quiet. Night after night, Hannah is plagued by strange nightmares about the past of Navajo Nation and terrifying shadows chasing her. They seem to come closer – and why is Josh always present in her dreams?
Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up with you.
Shona's review 5 of 5 stars
Whilst reading this book I was constantly aware that I couldn't give it the time I wanted to. My real life kept calling to me and I found myself reading Shadow of Time in small chunks and having to wait for what seemed like forever before I could pick it up again. From the very beginning I was drawn to this book in a way I haven't been with other books, so much so that I brought it along to a kids party my children were invited to and I hid myself away in a corner to read a chapter while they played. I even took it with me on a family day out so that I could read it in the car. Trust me it's not often I do this. But Hannah's story called to me.
Minkman has created not one but several likeable characters, we meet a nice selection of characters and they all have different personalities. I have to be honest, it took me a little while to like and trust Nick it seemed too convenient that he would appear when he did and for a while I suspected him to not be what he seems. I wonder if he was written into the book for this purpose or if that is just a product of my suspicious mind.
The story itself builds at a nice gentle pace allowing the reader to process everything that's happening so you never get overwhelmed with story. As we near the climax of the book the pace increases but it doesnt feel rushed. The mix of romance, paranormal and Navajo history make this a truly original story, add in the close-knit friendships and Minkman has written a winner that I can see myself reading time and time again. I look forward to reading more of Minkman's work
