Annabel Fanning Author Interview

About The Author

I'm a British-born, Australian-based author. I've previously published two novels for teens (in '09 and '12) and have recently completed my first piece of erotic writing.
At the beginning of 2014 (after having spent years writing other genres - historical, metaphysical, children's, romance) I decided I wanted to write about S.E.X.
I discovered very quickly that I couldn't JUST write about sex, I wanted (I needed) it to have context, depth, and meaning. So, I started writing, and writing, and writing... I had intended to produce a short story but in less than 3 months I surpassed the 100,000 words mark and I wasn't even half-way finished! Besides, I was having SO much fun! :D
That was in May this year. Then I decided to turn SHE into parts 1 & 2 and I took a break from the writing to focus on publishing the first part.
Through FB networking I met some wonderful women who read my novel and offered suggestions and were all very positive about the strength of the story. Together we edited it, and I designed and created the cover and the internal layout. And on October 17th 2014 I pressed the "launch" button and voila! I'm part of the Kindle and Amazon community :)

Interview

What inspired you to write your first book?
I had this influx of inspiration which I wrote down into what became the outline of my first trilogy. I was writing about a girl around my age (I was 19 at the time) and she was very confident and sure of herself. I was struggling with confidence at the time, so I think I wrote her to inspire myself.

Do you have a specific writing style?
No waffling, no mundane details. Tell the story - no more, no less.

How did you come up with the title?
This is a full circle — I had this image in my head of Logan (my main male character) at the very end of the story - he was quoting something from the song She by Charles Aznavour. Charles is a Parisian and She is set in Paris, so it all worked out perfectly.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I wanted to write about a love story that was easy, simple and drama-free, which seems to be a reason why She stands out.

How much of the book is realistic?
Lots, if not all of it. I believe that life and love can flow easily and joyfully.

Are your novels based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
I wish - LOL! No, She isn’t based on real life events.

Which of your novels have influenced your life the most?
I’ve written 3 separate series (7 books in total) and each series has brought/given me something that the others haven’t. They’ve each influenced in different ways for different reasons - for example: the first series sparked my passion for writing books. The second series deepened my love for story-telling, and this series (She 1 & 2) has definitely made me a better writer. All these gifts are invaluable to me.

What book are you reading now?
Nothing. I’ve just immersed back into my own work, and I tend not to read too much when writing myself. But a couple of weeks ago I read The Walsh Series by Kate Canterbary and loved it!

What are your current projects?
I’m currently working on SHE #2 - out sometime this year. It picks up where #1 leaves off…Gemima and Logan have gone away together. Once back in Paris, it’s the lead up to Logan’s birthday and, of course, to Gemima meeting his parents! Fun times head, I assure you!

Do you see your writing as a career?
The promo side of things is like a career, but the writing to me is always a passion, a privilege.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No, I wouldn’t. I’m so happy with the journey my characters have taken, and with the journey I went on whilst writing it, so I wouldn’t change a thing.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I’m a hopeless romantic, and my love of writing began with my love of love stories. The romance, the passion, the loyalty, the dialogue, the feelings, the sex…that thought that no one else on the planet knows how in love you are…these are things that I love, and so I wanted to write about them.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
She Part 1 tells the story of Gemima and Logan. They’re two American expats who live in Paris, who work in the same industry and who met for the first time many years ago. For Logan it was love at first sight, but Gemima was in a dead-end relationship at the time, so he waited. And waited. She Part 1 begins after Gemima’s old relationship is over and Logan has just found out that she’s single. They meet for lunch in a quaint Parisian cafe and it’s the start of something spectacular.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?
Only from one writing spot in my house to another, haha. No book tours or anything like that at the moment, but I’m open to it for the future.

Who designed the covers?
I sourced and bought the images on Shutterstock and tweaked them and added the writing etc myself.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
It’s a very special job we do (though I may be biased) so have fun with it, don’t take it too seriously (note to self!) and always put your gut instinct ahead of others’ opinions.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thank you! I’m been so thrilled with response that She Part 1 has gotten, the emails from readers have been brilliant, and I’m so grateful to be sharing this story with you all.
