Author Interview: Carol Pavliska

In the interview seat this week we have the lovely Carol Pavliska. Carol began her writing career as a family humor columnist and blogger, a pursuit she abandoned when her children grew old enough to realize they were being exploited. To save them from further embarrassment, she turned to writing fiction. Her debut novel is a steamy contemporary romance so, unfortunately, the children are still embarrassed.

Carol and her husband, both diehard Red Hot Chili Peppers fans, raise their vegan brood of mortified offspring on a cattle ranch in south Texas. No lie.

Hello and welcome to Booky Ramblings of a Neurotic Mom
From one neurotic mom to another, thank you!

Was there anything particular that inspired you to start your journey of being an author? Reading is what first inspired me to write. After I had children I began doing it in earnest to preserve memories. Several of my parenting stories were published in anthologies, and I also wrote a family humor newspaper column. It was a good run, but the older the kids grew, the less they appreciated being other people’s entertainment. I turned to fiction so I could write about pretend people who wouldn’t get their panties in a bunch when I aired their dirty laundry.

What would you say is the hardest part of writing/publishing a book for you?
Since I’m currently drafting a new novel, I’m going to say drafting is the hardest part. In a few months, I’ll be convinced editing and revising is the hardest. And I’ll be right.

If you could only read four books for the rest of your life, what would they be?
This is a difficult question! I don’t read many books more than once, but if I had to choose just four for the rest of my life, I’d start with 1Q83 by Haruki Murakami. He’s my favorite author and this is his longest book. It’s like three books in one, so I just cheated. Using that same line of reasoning, my second choice is Diana Galbadon’s Outlander, since it’s a long book, too. I’ll toss in Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass for a bit of transcendentalism, and something by David Sedaris for humor. All set for the rest of my life!

Do you and your main character share any personality traits?
The heroine of COLOR ME CRAZY is obsessed with musicians and spends most of her time attempting to master adulting, so yes, Cleo and I have a bit in common.

If you could live in any book what book would it be?
I’d live in the Outlander series because that’s where Jamie Fraser is and we should all be where Jamie Fraser is.

Where do your ideas for your books come from? Dreams? Music?
I have no idea. Latest one came from a funeral sign. I have so many “first lines” written down from weird sources of inspiration. I should probably publish a book of first lines entitled It was a Dark and Stormy Night… Any advice for aspiring authors? My advice is to learn the craft of writing. It’s tedious and tiresome, but it’s necessary. Make friends within the writing community. Also, with very few exceptions, the path to publishing is a long one, so pack your emotional suitcase accordingly.

Rock 'n' Spin

Cleo Compton has had her flings with rockstars—and it’s left her wary and bruised. Julian may have those sexy bedroom eyes and drool-worthy tattoos, but Cleo is determined to keep things strictly professional—until Julian turns out to be every dream she’s ever chased. When he risks it all to hit the road with a band again, Cleo fears he’ll return as the one thing she can no longer abide—a rockstar.
