To celebrate the release of Midnight Bites, a collection of short stories from the Morganville universe, I decided to revisit my review of Daylighters.
While Morganville, Texas, is often a troubled town, Claire Danvers and her friends are looking forward to coming home. But the Morganville they return to isn’t the one they know; it’s become a different place—a deadly one…
Something drastic has happened in Morganville while Claire and her friends were away. The town looks cleaner and happier than they’ve ever seen it before, but when their incoming group is arrested and separated—vampires from humans—they realize that the changes definitely aren’t for the better.
It seems that an organization called the Daylight Foundation has offered the population of Morganville something they’ve never had: hope of a vampire-free future. And while it sounds like salvation—even for the vampires themselves—the truth is far more sinister and deadly.
Now, Claire, Shane and Eve need to find a way to break their friends out of Daylighter custody, before the vampires of Morganville meet their untimely end…
Shona's review 5 of 5 stars
OK so this is the last book in the series and because of that I am going to reminisce a little over the entire series.6 and a half years ago my husband came across Glass Houses in a book store. I had recently redisocvered my love of reading but was lacking in books and was reading the Twilight saga over and over (don't judge me, just move it along), he suggested I give this a try since there was 8? books in the shop and he figured it would keep me busy for a while. I picked up 3 because although they sounded interesting I wasn't prepared to spend that much money on an unknown to me author/book series. 3 days later and I had devoured the first 3 books in the series and was begging my husband to take me back to the store to buy the rest of the books. And I haven't looked back since.
Every new book in the series has become a 'must have' for my shelf. If i haven't been able to get my paperback copy as soon as the book has been released i have downloaded the ebook version so that i can find out whats happening... its an addiction you know.
I wont lie to you, when we got to book 12 and 13 I started to think surely this is going on a little too long now, they could stop it now. I love the characters but really how many times can you have; Myrnin do something completely outrageous, attack Claire, fix something and all be forgiven... Shane fly off the handle and have his 'vampires need to die' switch be flicked, then come around and be all full of remorse and wanting to make it up to everyone... Eve and Michael's tortured relationship, oh he's a vampire, oh she hates vampires, (but not as much as Shane) oh they're in love and everyone's against them.... have a new 'enemy' pop up and have the Glass House residents find the solution before the readers get bored. Turns out 15 was a great place to stop and I am so glad they didn't stop it earlier, because this ending... this is the ending the Morgnvaille series deserved.
There have been enough episodes in the Morganvilles that as soon as you open those pages it feels like sitting down with an old friend. There is something so comforting about that.. but then you hit the content of the book (and if your anything like me) you go into shock along with the characters because OH MY FREAKING GOD WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED? I kid you not I spent most of this book on the edge of my seat with my nerves a frayed mess. I cried SO much throughout this book that the box of tissues never left my side. I tried to savour it but really I just couldn't put it down. This book demanded to be read, and read it I did.
As I read the last page I was suddenly torn. This was the ending the series deserved and I felt it was a great ending... but then there's that part of me that needs more (see.. I told you it was an addiction). This is a series that I have loved from the beginning. It has been great watching the characters develop (some more than others) and it has given me my most favourite of book Vampires: Myrnin. This is a series I will fall into again and again.
