Hello Samantha welcome to Booky Ramblings.
First off tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m a writer who milks cows in her spare time. Or is it the other way around? I think the cows may have priority. Unlike books, they can’t be laid down and ignored for too long or they get a bit cranky. I have three children, all of the furry kind: two cats (Josephine and Penelope) and a new baby bunny (tentatively called Hugo after a hobbit who liked to steal books). I have so many socks, they won’t all fit in one drawer.
What inspired you to write your first book? To be honest, I’m not one of those people who has always wanted to be a writer. I loved reading, but writing creatively just never occurred to me. In 2009, I tried NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), but I reached a point that made me sad and quit. Then in 2010 I tried again, and that’s when it clicked.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books? The writer is just the tool the characters use to get on the page. In that 2009 book I mentioned, a character that I really loved died. I wasn’t expecting it, it wasn’t planned. It just happened. It almost ruined my career before it began. But then I started up again in 2010 and that’s when I learned that I’m not in charge of the story. The villain that I had planned out so carefully said “Hey, uh, I’m not the villain, just so you know.” It was a lot of fun trying to figure out who the real villain was.
How long does it take you to write a book? That depends on the book. For my novella series, each novella takes me about a month. My first full novel, Blood of the Dragon, took three, but its sequel took me almost six. Some books are harder to write while others come rather easily.
Can you share a little of your current work in progress with us? Aiofe moaned, her arm jerking in miniature spasms until Titania clamped a fist around it, holding it tight. Rogan watched as the veins under the surface of the skin bulged visibly, flaring brightly like the skin on a hand cupped around a flame.
"Hold her." The queen's voice was calm, but her jaw was clenched as she gave Arthur the command to stabilize the thrashing young woman. Rogan stood at the head of the chaise, his hands clenching in rapid fits, a feeling of utter helplessness raging through him. More liquid dripped into the wound, leading to more sizzling and more thrashing. As the last drop tipped from the bottle, falling at a snail's pace to accost the boiling injury, Aiofe bucked against her captors, her back arching and her head tilting backward. Then a scream ripped through the room.
Describe your main character, in 5 words. I have a bit of an ensemble cast, but here are the two main characters.
Arthur - Loyal, leader, powerful, sure, destined
Aiofe - Headstrong, conflicted, uncertain, lonely, angry
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? I try to get my writing done early in the day. If I don’t, I tend to procrastinate until it’s too late.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? A lover of books is a lucky person. They don’t live just one life, they get to live many. Also, thanks for being totally awesome. I can’t count how many times I’ve been having a bad day and then a wonderful email from a reader totally turned it around.
Which authors would you say inspired you to write? JK Rowling was one, definitely. And Jim Butcher. They tell such wonderful stories. If I can make someone care about my characters the way they made me care about theirs, then I’ve done my job.
