Meet the Author:
Harmony Williams has been living vicariously in Regency-era England since she discovered Jane Austen. Since time machines don’t yet exist, she’s had to make do with books—fictional and non-fictional. On the rare occasion she doesn’t have her nose stuck in a book, she likes to drink tea and spend time with her 90-lb lapdog. A feminist, she writes stories about strong women and the men who support them as equals.
Was there anything particular that inspired you to start your journey of being an author?
Books. I’ve been a lover of books for as long as I can remember. Books have motivated me, inspired me, challenged me, and changed me. Reading so many beautiful stories stirred my imagination to the point that I want to provide that kind of magic for other people, as well.
What would you say is the hardest part of writing/publishing a book for you?
Endings are the hardest part of writing a book. I always have to rework my endings two or three times. I blame it on the fact that I have a lot more practice writing beginnings and middles. The proof: all the unfinished manuscripts on my hard drive!
If you could only read four books for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Oh boy, this is a tough one…
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen,
No One Lives Twice by Julie Moffett,
Terrier by Tamora Pierce,
and When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare.
Do you and your main character share any personality traits?
Yes! Francine from How to Ruin Your Reputation in 10 Days is the heroine that I think is most like me. We are both bookish wallflower types, both married to our work, and both intelligent and a bit sarcastic!
If you could live in any book what book would it be?
Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series. Same era that I love to write about (Regency England) but with dragons. Need I say more?
Where do your ideas for your books come from? Dreams? Music?
I get ideas from many places. Lyrics or daydreaming while I have the music on, watching TV or someone pass me on the street, learning a neat historical fact, and oddly enough, while I’m writing something else. My mind is in constant motion and “what if” seems to be the refrain by which I live my life.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
My biggest advice, and the one that I as an aspiring author would not like to hear, would be to take your time. This applies to all aspects of turning your writing to a career. Take your time editing so you can make your book the best it can be. Take your time researching publishers and agents so you can place your book at the best possible place. Take your time reading over the contract and get a second opinion. If you self-publish, take your time researching editors because a good editor will make your book stronger. Writing is an art, but publishing is a business. You might want to jump in feet first (I speak from experience!) but a little extra time and research will make all the difference in the finished product.
